Winter Wonderland!
How to prepare for winter
By Blake Kunst
Last years blizzard, Nemo, had a big impact on us. We got heavy snow that blocked doorways, and we could not go to school until the roads were cleared. Some people were not properly prepared for this snow storm. Here are some tips to help your family be better prepared for future winter storms.
Since you probably don't own a home, you need to remind your parents to get their furnace or fireplaces cleaned and inspected. Then, make sure the family oil tank is filled and ready to heat your home throughout the cold weather. If not, make sure to get wood for the fireplace. Make sure your shovel is in good shape for those snowy days when you may have to shovel the sidewalk or driveway, if it’s no good, buy a new one. Be sure to have your walkway salt and sand is ready to go for those icy mornings, and don't forget to replenish your supply after each storm so you have enough to go through the entire winter. Finally, make sure the snow blower is in safe and working condition.
Another good thing to do is to have a full tank of gas in car in case gas stations can’t open due to a storm. It’s also a good idea to make sure your parents have snow tires on their car so that you won’t slide on the roads as easily. In the winter it is very important you have good tire pressure as well since the temperature changes so quickly. This can be tested and fixed at your local gas station. Stock the house with plenty of non-perishable (canned) food items in case the power goes out and you can't use the stove. Also, to be sure to have a supply of bottled water. Remember these tips and you will be better prepared for winter this year.

Don't feel stranded this winter
By Aryana Agli and Savannah Rivers
Are you prepared for this year’s winter weather? Do you have fun activities planned so you're not bored? If not, then keep reading because this article is meant for you! If you have ever been trapped inside during a snowstorm then you probably know how boring it can be, especially when the power is out. To help you stay active, we have a list of things to do with and without power.
When you are stuck indoors with power here are a few things for you to do so you aren’t bored. When you have power to spare, you could have a video game marathon. When having a video game marathon, you could pick out your favorite games and play them all day, maybe even with your friends. Or if you aren’t to into video games, you could bake some sweet holiday treats. You can make some cookies or a special treat for you and your friends to share.
Being stuck inside without power can feel like the worst, but it doesn’t have to be. If you read the following activities, you can find ways to make the most of being stuck inside. This might be an obvious one, but taking a nap under tons of blankets while it’s freezing outside could just give you the best feeling ever. After that you can have your own “camp in” to keep warm. A camp in is where you sit by the fireplace in your coziest pajamas and just relax by the fire. It’s as easy as that, but make sure you have adult supervision when dealing with the fire.
We hope you enjoyed our look at winter fun and keep this in mind for upcoming storms. Remember to stay safe and keep warm. Happy winter!!!
