And it's history...
Remembering Senna, 20 years later
By Garrison Kunst
Ayrton Senna was a Brazilian Formula 1 driver. Formula 1 is open-wheeled racing, meaning no fenders over the wheels. It has an open cockpit, meaning only the driver’s head and hands are exposed. Senna is best known for winning three F1 championships. He has raced against many other legendary racers, such as Michael Schumacher, who has won seven championships. Senna proved that you don’t have to be wealthy to race.
Today, if you play Gran Turismo 6, you will see a version of his first go-kart. One of Ayrton’s most famous F1 cars was his Lotus 97T, which he used in his 1985 season. This vehicle is also available in Gran Turismo as well. On May 5, 1994, at the Tamburello corner, traveling at a speed of 310 kmh, (190 mph) Ayrton left the track and at a speed of 218 kmh (135 mph) hit the wall and tragically died. The Tamburello corner, which at the time was right after the front straight, was a very dangerous corner. A day earlier during practice, one of Senna’s friends, Roland Ratzenberger, had a fatal crash on the corner right after the Tamburello corner, the Villeneuve corner.
Since 2006, Formula One has decided not to put the track on the racing calendar. The racing calendar isn’t a calendar of days, it is a calendar of race-tracks. Ayrton’s sister, Viviane, started the Ayrton Senna Institute after his death. Senna will always be remembered for his attitude towards his career and his love for his family.

The life of MLK
By Audrianna McCormick
It may not be Black History month or Martin King Luther Jr. Day, but I would like to remind you of an American hero, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. King was Born on January 15th, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. King, who an African American, is also known as MLK and was one of the most powerful, loving, and indomitable men in the world. Martin is one reason why you have different friends of all colors, races, and heritages.
Back in the early to mid 1900’s, there was segregation in the south where whites and blacks lived separately and did not share public spaces. Turn this time many people, especially those in the southern US believed that white people were considered pure, successful, beautiful, and better. As a result of this attitude, people of a dark skin color living in the south may have been bullied and ridiculed because of their shade of skin. Sometimes blacks were even killed. This continued to happen for years, until one man changed it all; King, who had been mistreated for his entire life. Many whites thought that black people were ugly, worthless, and sinful. MLK and others wanted to change this attitude whites had against them.
From his famous "I Have a Dream" speech, we gain a greater understanding of his impact on Civil Rights in America as a whole. He spoke of how he wanted to see the end of racism and hatred, and that he prayed for peace and tranquility in the world. One of the important parts of his speech mentioned how he wanted a world where his children will not be judged by their skin color, but judged by their character.
King also organized protests where people purposefully broke laws that segregated whites and blacks. For example, African Americans protested by riding buses and eating in restaurants in the whites only section. Many of the protests caused public opinion to change and new laws were passed to create equal public access for all people regardless of their skin color. Despite all the great things MLK did, His life was ended early. A man named James Earl Ray shot Martin Luther while standing on the second-floor balcony of the Lorraine Motel on May 7th, 1968.
It’s important that we all know about this empowering man because he changed society. Today we have multi-racial and multi-colored family members and friends! It is, in part, because of King that blacks and whites can now interact without all the hatred as before.
