PBIS rewards
By Kailey Lewia
Have you heard of PBIS rewards? Did you know that Mr. Weber is in charge of PBIS rewards? Well now you know! Mr. Weber has been creating PBIS rewards for the last five years. He says these rewards affect students in a positive way because the school climate (positive behavior) has increased for the better. School referrals have gone down, it promotes positive behavior, helps display good behavior, and promotes positive decision making. Some rewards that have already been implemented are Fun On The Field, the French Toast Breakfast, and random rewards throughout the day.
In order to participate in these rewards, students need to earn stamps. If a teacher admires your behavior in class, or likes something you are doing, they could give you stamps to reward you for that. You can even use these rewards to redeem time in the game room. For those who don’t know about the game room, it’s an awesome place to spend time and hang out with friends. In the game room there is an air hockey table, an XBox 360, computers, board games, and a television.
In the future, students will have the opportunity to redeem their stamps to watch a movie in the auditorium, Bolt from the Blue, and even a trip to Mountain Mist Camp. Now that you know what some of these awesome rewards are, make sure to continue to behave appropriately in class. Remember not all rewards are stamp based. PBIS is also meant to promote less referrals, so some of the rewards are based off of that. So remember, next time you see Mr. Weber, thank him for all of these awesome rewards he creates for us!

It's time to get fit!
By Zeel Patel
Washington Middle School is proud to present a brand new addition. Recently, our small gym was converted into an amazing fitness center. The goal of the fitness center is to promote students to be healthy and to be exposed to the vast amount of exercises available when using fitness machines.
This fitness center is customized with a motivational new sound system and inspirational posters on the walls. The area is set up as a fitness circuit with 30 different machines which make up 15 different stations. Each station has two machines and targets different muscle groups. There are also weight and cardio machines.
Ms. Smith says, “It is important for kids to understand the proper form for exercise.” This is part of what kids learn in the fitness center. The fitness center also offers XBox games including Kinects.
If you are looking for a way to use the fitness center there are two opportunities. The Phys-Ed classes are taken there to use the machines during their classes. There is also a fitness club that takes place after school on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. There will be a new session that will start in January. If you are interested in joining you should talk to the advisor, Mr. Sharron. “It is a good thing to be a part of because it gets kids moving,” shares Ms.Smith.
There was a wonderful ribbon cutting celebration in October to celebrate the new fitness center. WMS was awarded the grant from the National Foundation for Governor’s Fitness Councils. The grant is valued at $100,000 and was sponsored by Coca-Cola Company.
Thank you to all the special people who were a part of our school celebration. Thank you to Ms.Smith, Mr. Maule, Mr. Southland, and Mrs. Rios for contributing to the grant, the WMS fitness representatives who demonstrated the equipment, the chorus for their musical performance, and the ambassadors for guiding and helping people visiting our school. This fitness center is a spectacular part of our school from which we can all truly benefit.
